So guys, this week we focused on providing good evidence to historic theories and we also talked about the advancement of cotton production. What do you think is the best type of source to use as proof for something? If you're thinking of a word that starts with a p you're probably right. Primary sources are the best evidence to prove history because it is a source of information created during that time in history. When we don't know everything about the history of something and can't find any good sources, we tend to make assumptions due to our prior knowledge as well as stereotypes(but try not to do this plz). To lead into the next topic we discussed, we found some ~primary sources~ showing the production of cotton done by slaves. Slave owners kept records of how much cotton each of their slaves picked each day. These records were kept to prove the worth of the slaves themselves and to prove the productivity of a plantation. All of these records kept on slaves showed a large increase of the amount of cotton picked/processed over the years. The cotton production increased by 5 times as much in just a span of 50 years. This increase in cotton production was due to the invention of new machines and also the pressing of longer hours plus punishment to the slaves:(. All of these statements on the cotton industry have been proven by primary sources and other types of evidence, so it all comes together!!
